Analysis of Sabotage

The film im going to analyse is Sabotage which was made in 1936. This film is made by Alfred Hitchcock which is another one of his suspense and shock films. A Scotland Yard undercover detective is on the trail of a saboteur who is part of a plot to set off a bomb in London. But when the detective's cover is blown, the plot begins to unravel.

This film is based on a young boy carries a package round London not knowing their is a bomb beneath the wrapped paper, this package was given by his sister. But he gets on a bus and the driver tells him you cant bring that on the bus and he asks the man again and the man lets him on the bus. The tension builds steadily as Stevie is continually delayed in his journey as he has to make it by a certain time. Minutes later we find out that he is to late to get back in time and then it shows a long shot of the bus exploding.  This is the main part of the film as the audience is glanced at this situation.

The Film Opening For Zodiac

This is also another film opening I did in class where we took down notes about the shots and conventions. This film is called Zodiac which was made in 2007.

This opening sequence of this film is based on a teenage girl and boy driving and stopping in a quiet place to have a nice chat. As they park up they here fireworks/bullets and a women is shouting and telling something to die. The boy knows something is not right and then he realized as a car parks up near him and turns off his headlights for a minute and then turns his headlights back on and drives off. This is when the tension starts to disappear but then builds up again. They both get anxious as he don't know whats going on but the girl does and she knows something bad is going to occur. As they sit in their car silently they could hear tire noises which builds up tension and shock. The next thing they know that same car comes back and parks up behind him gets his torch out but not showing his face. He comes up to the car and kills both of then and at this part of the scene it starts to go slow motion and the music starts to increase. The camera shot used in this little part of the clip was tracking shot, long shot, low key lighting. The colour that is mostly used is black to creates shock and tension to the viewer as they cannot see whats happening and could only hear the sounds.

The Film Opening Of Brick

This is another film we seen in class the film opening of Brick which was made in 2005. I have made notes on this film which I am going to talk about below.

This film is based on a dead girl underneath a tunnel where her hands and hair is slightly in the water, as she lays there died. The camera mainly focuses on her bracelet round her wrists and view of her legs and heels. When the camera shot is towards the boy the focus changes and blurs. A boy is looking over her whilst she lays down not moving. Flashback are in the film where it shows her hands putting a letter through someones locker. Throughout the film opening it has a non diegetic sound which is a sound of bells, which then turn into school bells as the shot of the girl putting a letter through the locker. This is called a sound bridge because the sounds overlap. The camera shots used in this opening is Close up, Extreme close up, and long shot.

This is one of the shots below of this opening scene.

Political Thriller

A political thriller is when they usually talk about votes and how they can win so they can control the country. These kind of thrillers usually gives us a mystery plot, and interesting plot and it sometimes a little bit of the story line can include assassination. It is also a political struggle which includes various extra-legal plots. It could contain national and international political scenarios.

Example of a political thriller could be The Last King of Scotland made in 2006. This is Based on the events of the brutal Ugandan dictator Idi Amin's regime as seen by his personal physician during the 1970s.

In 1970, the just-graduated doctor Nicholas Garrigan moves to Uganda to get rid of his conservative father. While working in a mission in the country, he meets the new President Idi Amin after the coup-d'é-tat that overthrow the former government. He is invited to become his personal physician in Kampala and along the years he sees how despotic his friend is.

Psychological Thriller

A psychological thriller creates suspense which often comes from two or more characters preying upon one another's mind. They do this by playing games or trying to demolish the other persons mental state. The plot usually focuses on  how the mind could be destroyed and horrified. Most of the psychological thrillers don't contain a lot of blood and gory.

An example of this could be Zodiac which was made in 2007. It is based on a true story where there is a serial killer in San Francisco. The killer wants to get his information across by sending messages to the newspaper. The person who creates the newspaper is a cartoonist where they discover the messages behind the killers message. The guy who works for the newspaper company gets tortured he can't take it no more so he decides to give up his job.

This shows that this film is full of horror and the serial killer is trying to torture the cartoonist.

Cause and effect plotting

In every film there needs to be a plot which makes the film go along.A cause is a action/event which leads to another action/event.The direct outcome of this action is the effect.Cause is the one that starts the action, which means that the effect must take place this will solve the problem.

It is listed below what a plot is referred to:

  • A chain of related events
  • Rising actions involves complications and difficulties
  • Scenes where the characters are overcoming difficulties
  • Climax is the high point of suspense
  • The ending is where all the action has been resolved and the film is coming to an end.

MacGuffin

A MacGuffin is a plot device that's motivates the characters in the film which makes the story line more interesting. This is usually used in stories, films and plays. As the scene goes on this is unimportant in the film and is not relevant to the story line. Its just an extra thing that is put into the film which catches the audiences attention and they think that it is important when its not. This is common in films this is especially used in many thrillers. It could sometimes come back in the film but more likely that it is forgotten at the end of the scene.

Alfred Hitchcock uses a lot of MacGuffin for example in Psycho the film starts off with $40,000 which catches the audiences attention but by the time it gets to the end of the film that money is not important in the film.

Another film by Alfred Hitchcock is Notorious made in 1946. This is a film where they use MacGuffin to get the audiences attention.

Enigmas

An enigma is usually a person, mystery, riddle or something hard to understand. It could also be a saying, question or picture which contains an hidden meaning. This means its something that cannot be explained. It would need careful thinking about what is behind the meaning. Also, it could be something that baffles understanding and cannot be explained

Suspense and Shock

Suspense is a feeling of excitement or anxiousness, also a uncertainty of what is going to happen. This can happen at any time of the film where there is a lead up to a big event or dramatic moment, this is what builds up tension for the viewers.

Shock is similar to suspense as when you are shocked it catches the audience attention and usually the audience is focused on the film. Shock is to strike with great surprise and emotional disturbance. It is a moment of fear where the next part of the scene is going to be shocking.

An example of this could be Sabotage made in 1963, director of this is also Alfred Hitchcock. A Scotland Yard undercover detective is on the trail of a saboteur where a bomb is suppose to be set in London. A boy has a wrapped up box which has got a bomb inside where it explodes on a bus. But when the detective's cover is blown this is when everything starts to unravel.

Cinematography

This comes form the two combined words: kinema which means movement and graphein which means to record. Cinematography refers to the photographing of the movie itself. The person who directs the film is usually known as the director but could also be known as the cinematographer. This is also linked in with the camera and lighting department.

Film making is shooting a film and capturing images, its making the image look beautiful, getting a emotional sub text, a tone, a vibe through to the audience visually.

There are so many job roles needed to make a scene/film some of which are listed below:

Camera operator they are responsible for operating the camera and maintaining composition and camera angles accurate throughout the scene. They are the one that support the director of photography. It is their responsibility to insure that the camera is moving steadily.

Director of photographyThe director of photography is the chief of the camera and lighting crew of the film. They make decisions on lighting and framing of scenes in conjunction with the film's director. The director tells them how he or she wants the film to look, and they then chooses the correct aperture, filter, and lighting to achieve the desired effect.
Grip departments:Their responsibility is to look after the equipment and make sure the equipment is built properly so the camera can be placed on top of it without breaking or falling. These equipment includes tripod, dollies, tracks, jibs, cranes etc. You need a high level of experience to be able to move these equipment around and operate them.

Cliffhangers

A cliffhanger is hoped to ensure the audience will return to see how the characters resolve the dilemma and how they try get out of it. The main character is the person who falls into a big dilemma and tries getting out of it. It usually happens at the end of the scene that leaves the character in a impossible situation e.g. hanging off the side of a cliff. The purpose is so that the audience watching this or reading this watches the next series/chapter of the film/book.

The name cliffhanger came out because a film was made and one part of the scene was that a object was hanging off a cliff and now they use the term cliffhanger.

E.g.The Italian Job

This image shows a cliffhanger from The Italian Job which was made in 1969. This is the last part of the scene where there are many men on a runner, who stole gold and they are at the edge of the cliff. This is where the end of the scene ends so no one knows what happens this is why its called a cliffhanger.

Red Herring

The expression “red herring” refers to a strategy by misleading people from the real matter by distracting them or the most important details of the situation. Red herring is usually seen in films that have like an adventure to it.  Usually the truth is a killer or a robber but the film tries to make sure that the audience think that its something different until the very end.

This could lead to some of the films Alfred Hitchcock has made as some of his stories, the audience think that a character is one person but it all changes at the end when she unravel the truth. e.g. Psycho. In this film a man acts like his mothers alive but at the end of the scene the audience find out that his acting for himself and his mother.

Lighting

In a studio when they are filming it is usually form three different light source such as:

Key lighting: Brightest, main light on subject. It is usually the most influential.
Back lighting: counters the key light, making the character or object look more rounded.
Filler lighting: Softens the harsh key light, eliminates harsh shadows and there may be more than one filler light.

These source of lighting can be in different positions which makes different affect:

  • Under lighting: This is where the lighting is coming from underneath this creates a distorting effect of the character/object.This kind of lighting is used in thrillers and horror films.
  • Top lighting: This lighting comes from above which gives a flattering look and highlights the features of the character. If it was used in a film with someone glamorous in it then this kind of lighting will be used.
  • Back lighting: this light source comes from behind the subject. If no lighting is used this lighting also creates silhouettes.

Low Key lighting: This is created by using the key light and back light. This will create a contrast of light and dark areas on the screen as very deep, distinct shadows are formed. This is also known as chiaroscuro, which in Italian it means light.

High Key lighting: This affect is created by using lots of filler light, the lighting to our eyes makes the image look realistic and normal. This reduces the light in the image and makes the character/object bright and happy.

Editing and continuity editing

Continuity editing this refer to arranging the sequence of shots to suggest a progression of events. If they use the same shot the editor can come up with different types of scenarios.
For example:

  •  A man glancing up in surprise
  • Another man pulling a gun and firing it towards the camera
In the first order it looks like the first man has been shot. But if you reverse the order the an is watching a shooting take place.

Editing is the process of looking at all of the footage shot during the making of a film and programs and placing it in he desired order and joining it together.
There are two key areas to concentrate on with editing:

Speed of editing: how long does each shot last.
Style of lighting: How each shot is joined to the next.

Dissolve:

  • Merge to a different scene
  • Artificial web to real web
  • Fading one shot of screen while another shot is fading out.
  • See both shots-used:connection between two characters, fades places or object.
  • A gradual darkening or lightning black/white.
  • One shot fade until only a black or white screen can be seen.
  • Indicate in the end of a particular section within the narrator.
  • Can show the passing of time.

Straight Cut:

  • most common and invisible form of transition.
  • one shot instantaneously to the next without attracting the audiences attention.
  • straight cuts help retain reality. They don't break viewers suspension of disbelief.

Wipes:

  • One image is pushed off the screen by another.
  • Image can be pushed left or right.
  • Is more common for image to be pushed to left more consistence.
Jump Cut:
Digital Video Editing: The Grammar of Editing

  • A jump cut is where the audiences attention is brought into focus on something very suddenly.
  • This occurs by breaking the continually editing, this is known as discontinuity.
  • It appears as a section of the film has been removed. A moment when the film is stopped.

Chuck Jones and 'The rules'

Chuck Jones is a animated character who works at Warner Brothers for decades making short movies. Starring bugs bunny, Daffy Duck and the company. He also made the road runners cartoons and from the first episode, an elaborate set of rules emerged.

The Rules

1. The Road Runner cannot harm the Coyote except by going "meep, meep."
2. No outside force can harm the Coyote -- only his own ineptitude or the failure of Acme products. Trains and trucks were the exception from time to time.
3. The Coyote could stop anytime -- if he were not a fanatic.
4. No dialogue ever, except "meep, meep" and yowling in pain.
5. The Road Runner must stay on the road -- for no other reason than that he's a roadrunner.
6. All action must be confined to the natural environment of the two characters -- the southwest American desert.
7. All tools, weapons, or mechanical conveniences must be obtained from the Acme Corporation.
8. Whenever possible, make gravity the Coyote's greatest enemy.
9. The Coyote is always more humiliated than harmed by his failures.
10. The audience's sympathy must remain with the Coyote.
11. The Coyote is not allowed to catch or eat the Road Runner.

paranormal activity 4

I done a review of this film as I thought it was a good film to watch. I think this is a tremendous film not as horrifying as i thought it would be but to some people it might make them jump. Below, is a bit about the film but not all of what happens in the film.

This is a film which is based in a home where unbelievable scene take place. It has been five years since the disappearance of Katie and Hunter. After Katie killed her boyfriend, sister and husband and took their baby Hunter. This was filmed in 2011 when all this took place. This is five years later which mainly focuses on Alex and her family and the little boy who lives across the street named Robbie since the new neighbours have moved into town.

One night Alex is on her laptop to her boyfriend Ben and then she hear sirens coming from outside she checks whats happening and then realizes that something has happened to Robbie's mum. So she quickly goes and tells her mum as Robbie's mum goes hospital Robbie has to stay in Alex's house.
At night before she goes sleep she goes on webcam to Ben and talks to him. When she goes downstairs she takes her laptop with her and she hears various noises.

So her boyfriend starts to set up laptops around the house which stays on all night and records all the movement around the house. As they record each event every night a scene takes place where Robbie is possessed and he goes downstairs and talks to his imaginative friend. Robbie seems interested in  Alex's brother called Wyatts but they both try and keep the secret away from Alex.

She explains it to her parents but they don't seem to understand the situation or believe what they say. There are some night where objects break but the parents don't know how unlike Alex and Ben they do.

Sound Exercise

Where were you?

This was a sound exercise we were asked to do, to see if we can use the microphones to capture sounds as we experimented with it. This video was directed by Lucie Stevens and starring myself and Taylor Anne-Corney. This video contains a one on one conversation between myself and Taylor Corney. It took us a short amount of time to edit the video and upload it as it was a short conversation for the sound exercise.

This is the video we have made below:

Diegetic and non-diegetic sounds

Diegetic

Diegetic sound can also be known as actual sound in a film. This is sound that is visible on the screen or it can also be off screen e.g. Voices of characters, sound made by objects in the story or it could be music which is represented as instruments in the story space.

This can be an example of a diegetic sound:

Non- diegetic

Non diegetic sound can be known as commentary sound in a film. This is sound that is not visible or it is represented as a sound coming from a outside story. This is sound effect which is added as a dramatic effect, mood music or narrators commentary.

This can be an example of a non- diegetic sound:

Camera Shot Exercise

A Lovers Tiff

This is our first video by Me(Tania Begum), Ashleigh Westcott, Lucie Stevens we filmed a short clip using all the different camera techniques we have learnt in class.

Evaluation

We was asked to create a short clip using the camera shots e.g. Low angles,High angles, P.O.V, over the shoulders etc. Lucie Stevens was the person who filmed it alongside me who was the director. Also, there was Ashleigh Westcott and Georgia Meakin who was the actors of the clip. As our first filming we recorded in Robert Clack Lower School and i believe we communicated well as a group. We put our ideas together as we planned this video and i think it went well with the acting as well as the filming and editing. As we edited the video we cut out all the extra parts that was not needed in the video an tried to take as many shots from different angles to make the video look better. We made our clip in slow motion so it could merge in with the music by Edwina Hayes. I reckon that this song fitted perfectly with out video because of the slow motion we added.

Mise-en-scene

Mise-en-scene

It is the arrangement of everything that appears in the framing, which is the camera shot that is being taken. This can be important for the viewers as they might pick out little objects or shots that could symbolize something. E.g. The colour black can refer to darkness, the absence of light, fear, murder, scared etc. Also, the colour red can refer to different types of emotion which can be red standing for fire which is danger or red could stand for love, this all depends on the genre of the film.

The most important part of the film is to insure they have correct props,  tones, actors, lightening and costumes. This is what makes the film come to real life and gives that effect to the film genre.

Examples of this could be a shot of a tree, this can be threatening as the shot could be in the dark. But as you can see below there can be another shot of the tree which is in the daylight which can be used to make it look happy and non- threatening.

Psycho By Alfred Hitchcock

Psycho

This is another of Alfred Hitchcock film that we have seen in class. It is a horror and mysterious film. As they say It Is Required That You See Psycho From The Very Beginning!

There is a man called Norman Bates who has two different personality and throughout the whole film he pretends to be two person without the audience even knowing until the end. As we find out that he acts as his mother and himself.

Phoenix office worker Marion Crane is fed up with how life has been treating her and how people control her. She has a lover called Sam but they can only see each other on there lunch breaks. They want to get married but they don't have enough money because Sam has to give his money away in alimony. As Marion's employer trusts her, he gives her $40,000 to put in the bank. But Marion decides to run away with the money and start a new life. So she leaves the town and head towards Sam's California store. As she's tired after that long day and caught in the storm, she decides to pull over to The Bates Motel.

As she books into the check book she is given a room and some food to eat by Norman. Then she decides to go into the shower with out knowing what is going to happen.  As shes having a bath u get this Non-diegetic sound which creates calm and relaxing feeling. But as soon as the curtains are open the diegetic sound takes place as it puts the audience in shock and danger. As she gets murdered in the shower by his mother.
This is showing us that Norman's mother is killing Marion whilst she's having a shower. It shows us that she's in full shock but don't have time to escape and then is killed.

He drags her body to the boot and in the river and he claims she never stayed in the motel to the detective,as she was missing for a few days. Then the detective finds out her name was in the check book and so Norman changed the story and said he did not talk to her that night as she was tired and she left the next morning.

As Norman don't want anyone to know his mothers identity and don't want anyone to get close to his mother he tries killing people to hide the truth. As everything is revealed at the end of the scene.

Recipe for a thriller

What is a thriller?

A thriller is usually either a book or film which is designed to make the reader or audience with suspenseful and sensational actions.

Thriller can can be characterized in many ways such as fast-pacing, frequent actions, resourceful heroes. devices such as suspense, red herrings and cliffhangers are usually used extensively, this is so it catches the viewers attention. A thriller is an obstacle a hero has to overcome.

There are different types of thriller that we have discussed in class:

Sub genres

Crime thriller: This genre is a hybrid type of both crime films and thrillers. It creates suspense to the viewer as they don't know what's going to happen next. if the scene is between the criminal and the policeman the film usually focuses on the criminal not the policeman. Crime thriller usually emphasise action over psychological aspects. E.g. The Dark Knight by Christopher Nolan

Conspiracy thriller: is when the villain confront a large group of enemies. this thriller is often journalists or amateur investigators who find themselves pulling on a small thread which unravels everything. E.g. State of play by Kevin Macdonald.

Action thriller: in which the work often features a race against the clock, contains lots of violence, and an obvious antagonist. these film usually contain large amount of guns and explosion. E.g.

Disaster thriller: in which the main conflict is due to some sort  of natural or artificial disaster such as floods.

Drama thriller: consists of the elements of a thriller and drama film. These fils are usually slower paced and and sometimes involves a plot twist.

Erotic thriller: this contains erotica and thriller. This has become popular since 1980's and the rise of VCR market penetration.

Spy thriller: in which there is a hero that tried getting rid of violent actions.

North by Northwest by Alfred Hitchcock

North by Northwest

This is another film i have been watching in Media which is called 'North by Northwest' by Alfred Hitchcock. It was a fascinating film that I watched as it involves a lot of mystery and suspense. It draws you into the film and makes you tense as the film carries on.

Madison Avenue advertising man Roger Thornhill finds himself  thrust into the world of spies when he is mistaken for a man by the name of George Kaplan. A series of scene takes place as his mistaken for another guy. He is tricked by many people in the film but tries to get out of any mess he gets in and tries to avoid the police throughout the film.

Getting away from the Helicopter

Alfred Hitchcock mistaken for Mr Kaplan is given a address to meet a the real Mr Kaplan. He goes there as he thinks he need to meet him and so he waits for a long time as vehicles go past him.  In a field where there is no one walking a field full of long dry grass. He waits until someone comes off the coach and asks is he Mr Kaplan but the guy says no and gets back on another coach. He waits and waits....

The next thing you know there lots of noise he looks around and as soon as he looks up he can see a helicopter coming towards him and falls quickly on the ground. He finds out that the helicopter is trying to kill him and that its coming towards him again to hit him. He knew he could be in a serious situation so he rapidly ran to the grass and hid there until the helicopter disappeared.

The Birds by Alfred Hitchcock

The film that I have been watching in Media Studies is “The Birds”, which was made and released in 1963. I think that the film was quite interesting with all the scenes that took place. It shows all the innocent people getting attacked by the birds especially the children from the school. Hitchcock's classic about a woman (Hedren) and mass bird attacks that follow her around isolated California community.  It is the apocalyptic story of a northern California coastal town filled with an assault of seemingly unexplained, random and chaotic attacks of ordinary birds - not birds of prey. Alfred tries to stop all this from happening and locks all the doors and window from the bird getting in the house.

A scene from 'The Birds' the attack

Everyone was sleeping in the house whilst Melanie heard the birds  gather in the attic as Melanie goes in she hears shattering noises. So she decides to go up the stairs to see what it was she knew that all the doors and window was locked so how can she still be hearing noises of birds. As she gets to the top of the stairs the noise becomes louder and louder. She turns the door handle and opens the door she takes a step in the room and she gets her torch and shines it in front of her and then....

She looked above and she saw the hole in he attic as she blinked all the birds started to come at her and attacked her. She could hear all the noise coming towards her as they cut her and made her bleed. As she struggles to get out of the room it was so long after that she fell on the floor. She was shouting for Alfred he came running up the stairs to rescue her and get her out of the room full of birds.

Melanie walks in through the door she gets attacked by hundreds of birds.

The image above shows us Melanie been attacked by the birds and now she’s in shock.
