Diegetic and non-diegetic sounds

Diegetic

Diegetic sound can also be known as actual sound in a film. This is sound that is visible on the screen or it can also be off screen e.g. Voices of characters, sound made by objects in the story or it could be music which is represented as instruments in the story space.

This can be an example of a diegetic sound:

Non- diegetic

Non diegetic sound can be known as commentary sound in a film. This is sound that is not visible or it is represented as a sound coming from a outside story. This is sound effect which is added as a dramatic effect, mood music or narrators commentary.
